THE LUCANIAN WAY - TRAIL

6 days and 5 nights

The tour follows the stages of the Matera Way – Lucanian Route, an authentic path away from the more traveled routes. Five days of walking and cycling, with transfers to and from the airport, luggage transport, and provision of bicycles for the final stages. This route crosses one of the least known areas of the country, where the silence of the landscapes and the absence of crowds offer an intimate and genuine experience. Unlike other Matera Way itineraries, tourism remains distant here until the final arrival in Matera, when the city opens up like a radiant finish after days of tranquility.

Day #1: BARI AIRPORT – ALBANO DI LUCANIA
Independent arrival at Bari Airport, meeting with the driver, and transfer to Albano di Lucania for the overnight stay.

Day #2: ALBANO DI LUCANIA – TRICARICO
The first stage, 22 km long, is perhaps the most challenging: the trails climb over a thousand meters, passing through beautiful forests leading to Tricarico. Here, you can feel the legacy of Rocco Scotellaro, the Lucanian poet and activist who dedicated his life to defending the dignity of workers.

Day #3: TRICARICO – GRASSANO
The second stage, 21 km and of medium difficulty, winds through countryside trails and forests rising above 850 meters. The arrival is in Grassano, the village that first welcomed Carlo Levi during his exile, leaving a deep mark on his memory.

Day #4: GRASSANO – GROTTOLE
The journey continues with a stage of about 20 km, crossing the hilly and sandy landscapes of the Bradano Valley. The destination is Grottole, a village reminiscent of a small Matera, yet one that has experienced a different and quieter fate.

Day #5: GROTTOLE – MIGLIONICO – POMARICO
From this day, the journey continues by bike: from Grottole, head south to reach Miglionico, the city of the Barons’ Conspiracy, home to one of the best-preserved castles in Basilicata. The route then continues toward Pomarico, covering a total of 33 km.

Day #6: POMARICO – MONTESCAGLIOSO – MATERA
The final day of cycling is one of the easier ones, with only gentle slopes before reaching Matera. Here, effort gives way to awe: arriving in the “City of the Sassi,” one of Italy’s most fascinating towns, offers unforgettable emotions. The stage covers 41 km.

Day #7: BARI AIRPORT
After check-out, meet your driver and transfer to Bari Airport for departure.

End of services.
