BASILICATA

BASILICATA

DISCOVER THE REGION'S TOP DESTINATIONS

The name Basilicata probably derives from the Greek word basilikòs, a testament to the strong Byzantine influence on the region during the Middle Ages. In fact, the area was a favored destination for Basilian monks, drawn by the beauty and silence of its remote landscapes—places seen as a refuge from worldliness and sin. Centuries later, Basilicata has retained much of its original charm: still little-known and often underestimated, it remains one of Italy’s most surprising and genuinely captivating regions.

Some of the most remarkable works we recommend visiting:

  • Lucania ’61 (detail), Carlo Levi – Museo Nazionale di Matera – Lanfranchi Site, Matera
  • San Benedetto, Byzantine Master – Church of Santa Lucia alle Malve, Matera
  • Portrait of Camillo D’Errico, Giacomo De Chirico  – Pinacoteca D’Errico, Palazzo San Gervasio
  • Bread Between the Knife and the Peasant, Carlo Levi – Pinacoteca Levi, Aliano
  • Mandola Player, Gaspare Traversi – Museo Nazionale di Matera – Lanfranchi Site, Matera
  • Fresco, Giottesque School – Church of San Francesco, Irsina
